Bidirectional Energy and PowerFlex join PG&E’s residential V2X program, helping accelerate adoption of new bidirectional technology and giving customers more ways to save money, boost home resilience, and support grid reliability

EVs from Kia, Volvo, Polestar, and Nissan are now approved and eligible for participation

OAKLAND, Calif., Aug. 24, 2026 /PRNewswire/ — Pacific Gas and Electric Company (PG&E) today announced a significant expansion of its Vehicle-to-Everything (V2X) program, adding several new vehicles and charger options that give customers greater energy resilience and choice in how they power their lives and participate in California’s clean energy future.

This includes the addition of Bidirectional Energy and PowerFlex as approved partners, broadening the network of automakers, charger manufacturers, and software solutions providers participating in the program.

Q: What is PG&E announcing?
A: Today, PG&E announced a major expansion of its Vehicle-to-Everything (V2X) program, adding new vehicles and charger options through partnerships with Bidirectional Energy and PowerFlex. This expanded network of automakers, chargers, and software solutions gives customers more choices, including the addition of Kia, Volvo, Polestar, and Nissan EVs.

Q: Why is this expansion important for customers?
A: “This expansion is all about choice,” said David Almeida, Director, Clean Energy Transportation at PG&E. “By broadening the mix of eligible vehicles and chargers, we’re helping our customers access this valuable technology, while also offering them a way turn their EV into a home backup and a grid asset.”

The expansion builds on the Ford, Tesla, Chevrolet, GMC, and Cadillac models already on the Eligible Products List. 

Q: What is Vehicle-to-Everything (V2X)?
A: V2X technology allows compatible electric vehicles to be used as mobile batteries. With a bidirectional charger, customers can use the electricity stored in their EV battery to:

• Provide backup power to their home during outages
• Help manage household energy costs
• Send power back to the grid during periods of high electricity demand
• Support overall grid reliability

PG&E’s Vehicle-to-Everything (V2X) program offers customers financial incentives to install new bidirectional EV charging technology, which allows a customer’s EV to act as a mobile battery, capable of storing electricity that can be used to power their home.

Q: What new options are being added to the program?
A: Customers can now participate through partnerships with Bidirectional Energy and PowerFlex. Newly eligible vehicle and charger combinations include:

• Nissan Leaf (2018-2025) with a dcbel Ara charger
• Volvo EX90 (2025) with a dcbel Ara charger
• Polestar 3 (2025) with a dcbel Ara charger
• Kia EV9 (2024 and newer) with a Wallbox Quasar 2 charger
• Kia EV6 (2025 and newer) with a Wallbox Quasar 2 charger

These offerings qualify for up to $13,000 in additional incentives being made available through California Energy Commission grant funding, subject to additional eligibility requirements.

Q: Are there any other vehicles being added as part of this expansion of the program?
A: Yes. The expanded program also now includes new EV models from General Motors:

• Chevrolet Bolt (2027)
• Cadillac Celestiq (2025 and newer)
• Cadillac Escalade IQL (2025 and newer)

Customers can also participate through existing options from Ford, General Motors, and Tesla. Capabilities vary by vehicle and charger combination.

Q: Has PG&E deployed V2X technology elsewhere?
A: Yes. PG&E has also advanced V2X solutions for commercial and fleet customers. The company has worked with school districts in Fremont, Oakland, and San Francisco to support the transition to bidirectionally capable electric school bus fleets. These projects help districts reduce emissions and operating costs while providing additional support for California’s electrical grid.

Q: What incentives are available for residential customers?
A: Residential incentives include:

• $2,500 upfront ($3,000 for customers in disadvantaged communities)
• $1,500 Early Adopter Incentive for the first 250 customers to enroll

Q: What about commercial customers?
A: PG&E has supported Fremont, Oakland, and San Francisco school districts in transitioning to bidirectionally capable electric school bus fleets, helping the districts save money and reduce emissions. Today, over 90% of the nation’s 500,000 school buses run on carbon-based fuels, releasing over 8.4 million tons of greenhouse gases annually, exposing students and communities to harmful fumes. By replacing gas – and diesel-powered vehicles with electric ones, PG&E is helping reduce tailpipe emissions and improving air quality.

Commercial incentives include:

• $2,500 upfront ($3,000 for customers in disadvantaged communities) for installing a
  3-phase bidirectional charger less than 50 kW.
• $4,500 upfront ($5,000 for customers in disadvantaged communities) for installing a
  3-phase bidirectional charger greater than or equal to 50 kW.
